History:
Deeracing…a street drag racing team, established around the idea to go racing with an 80’ Oldsmobile Delta 88 with a 455 cid engine. But of second though, full bodied Olds turned to be way too heavy to ever go fast with reasonable effort, so, smaller and lighter car was in a sight.
After a while A Chevy Nova Stationwagon was obtained with reasonable price. An 454 engine that came with a car, turned out cracked at lifter valley and camshaft bearing line, forced us to get another engine core. Luckily there was a good candidate at the e-Bay that time. Price was right, Juha win the bidding, and the engine was shipped from Florida to Finland, to the other side of the globe.
Racing Class, Street D:
Cars over 6000 cm2 (366cid) up to 7870 cm2(480 cid).
The car once registered to Finland mandatory.
Headlights, windshield wipers etc. required, must be identified specific make and model.
Fiberglass allowed, minimum weight 1400 kg (3080lb).
Engine setback allowed no more than #1 sparkplug parallel to front axle line.
DOT racing slicks allowed. Racing casoline allowed.
The Car and a diary (season 2007):
Nova STW was a former street drag car, but definitely need updated to todays Finish Hot Rod Association’s (FHRA) rules. Rules based mostly on NHRA rulebook, with few national additions.
We started to work with a car December 06’ and a target was a season openings at Motopark last week of May 07’.
Goal was met after spent last week with 20 hour days at the garage. Juha got the natonal licence after five approved runs on Saturday qualifications, but leaking water pump prevented to participate Sunday’s eliminations.
Car also suffered lack of power at the burnout and first 330ft down the track.
-Three Weeks later, June 16th – 17th, for the KamasaTools nationals at the Alastaro raceway, Novas performance was improved due a smaller carburator whitch we borrowed from a fellow competitor. Fastest qualification run was stored at the books 10.663 et / 208,97 km/h. Not to say there is lots of room for improvement. Car definitely needs a higher stall torque converter to hook up at the line.
Sunday ended with defeating to Jarmo Vellamo’s Malibu 9.37s vs. 10.78s. When a coast down after that pass, torque converter bolts broke loose and that finished a weekend.
Juha decided to purchase another, higher stall torque converter and a transmission with a trans-brake.
-Next event, FHRA Nitro Nationals July 5 – 8.
Unfortunately new transmission gave up at the time car was about to load to the trailer. There was no chance to get it fixed for next day qualification. Juha was so bummed that he spend a weekend in a summer cabin, and rest of us went to the races as a spectators.
-Rautia Summernationals at Kalajoki municipal airport. July 21.-22. Hope we can improve et's there. Expecting for a faster 60 foot times.
And yes, that what happened there. 60 foot time improved from 1,62 s to 1,53 s. Otherwise the race was'nt went so good. For a last run on saturdays qualifications, Juha tried to launch with a trans brake and ended up stalling the engine at the starting line and not allowed to retry. All day et's were low 11's and bested 10,98s/193kmh (120mph). Sunday went by with nothing but a problems. There was one qualification run before eliminations ad it ended with fuel leak. There was some accumulated old fuel under intake runners on a lifter walley and it spilled out during a burnout causing Juha to go backwards again. Same thing happened at the opening round at the elminations. Though fuel residues was thorougly cleaned out...there must be some left and that calls a day.
For now we are pretty sure that we have a too large carburator and we are out of ideas to get it working properly.
- Yeah... New Demon Carburator is in place and we had a chance to test it at Kiikala, saturday aug. 25th. It's an airport track and we gonna participated Et Bracket class. Track was extreamly slippery. No progress what comes to performance. Carburator works well but we pulverised a piston and windowed a block. Too bad. Now we have to skip season finals at Alastaro, because we don't have a spare engine, and there is only one week to the finals.
That calls a season. Long winter time ahead to get together a new motor. Probably we can get a size up to 477 ci, and by that, get closer to competition :)
